MOVE MAKE MEAN
tales on hands
The exhibition ‘Move Make Mean’ spawns from an in-depth research about the performance of creation of an artefact and the body-mind metaphor. The study articulates in three parts: it debuts with a literary reference to the aesthetic of the ritual ceremonies in Byzantine era, as illustrated in the De Cerimonis by Costantino VII. Then, a visual narrative revolves around The Hand as the representation of body-mind expression, appropriating space, handling, and fashioning artifacts. Lastly, the egg as object and metaphor ends the sequence, representing the purest creation, allegory of fertility, resurrection, and life. Move Make Mean materializes in an exhibition where the literary section is intangible as it’s the kinaesthetic exploration of the exhibition itself. The second piece is a video installation focused on 3 chapters ( displacement Move, shaping Make and vehiculate meaning Mean – i.e. the exhibition title), which serves as a contemplative junction between the ‘human body-maker’ and the ‘tangible artifact’, represented by the egg sculptures carefully positioned on the ground, that visitors are invited to touch.
Elements of the research are therefore conveyed in the exhibition space as fragments, that can be recollected by the mind of the beholder through navigation and interaction. Both the research and the exhibition were conceived in the framework of the Postgraduate program ‘Moving Images Arts – Movies” at IUAV Venice. “Debris”, exhibition curated by Peter Welz, took place at Palazzo Tito, Foundation Bevilaqua La Masa in Venice in early 2023.
